Business, Not Government, is Leading the Green Movement

What’s going on? In the past, businesses found few incentives to invest in earth-friendly practices. But in recent years, consumers have started to factor sustainability more into their purchasing decisions as there’s a growing awareness about the health and lifestyle benefits to being green. Governments have provided financial incentives to help companies’ implement eco-friendlier practices. Here’s a look at the benefits big and small businesses alike have reaped by undertaking sustainability initiatives:

-   Good publicity. Touting  environmental good practices has shown itself as an excellent way to draw positive attention and more customer loyalty to a business (as long as it’s not “greenwashing.”)
 -   Bottom-line savings. Sustainable business measures often come with upfront costs (think installing new energy-efficient equipment or hiring a sustainability consultant). But the paybacks on many sustainability measures, whether lower energy bills or lower transportation costs, can save businesses a lot of money over the long run. (Coca-Cola says it saved $90 million in 2010 alone by reducing its packaging waste.)
 -   Happier people. Whether or not they choose to do business with you because of sustainability measure, many customers feel good knowing they are supporting businesses doing the right thing by being environmentally friendly.

Given the many benefits businesses are finding to “going green,” it’s likely that more and more businesses will continue to do so, regardless of what government leaders do.

Maintaining Hard Surface Floors in Health Care Facilities

While some health care facilities have carpeting in lobbies and other common areas, the flooring installed in these types of locations usually is a hard surface, such as vinyl composition tile or terrazzo. Hard surface flooring is selected for a very practical reason: spills of all kinds can be cleaned up fairly easily and quickly with little or no damage to the floor.

Below are some of the more common floor care problems that arise in health care environments along with ways to address them.

The floor appears soiled or lacks shine after mopping or refinishing. A number of issues can cause this scenario, but at the top of the list is the cleanliness of the mops used to maintain the floors and apply finish. Are the mops clean? Before performing many floor care tasks, such as refinishing a floor, it is best to select new, unused mops for the job. Also, the mops used to clean and rinse the floor should not be used to apply finish; keep finishing mops separate from cleaning mops.

How Cleaning Your House Can Reduce the Likelihood of Allergy Related Health Problems

Quick tips on proper summer house cleaning practices to maintain an allergy free household

It’s summer again and that means allergy season, pollen is in the air and mold is looking for a damp place to grow. There are many ways to prevent allergies but one of the easiest is simply keeping your home clean. Here are a few tips on how to keep your house clean in order to prevent allergy related discomfort.

Beds
One of the most important tasks is to make sure to wash all sheets and pillowcases at least once per week. If this isn’t possible make sure to at least change the sheets and remove dirty sheets from all bedrooms.
Carpets
Carpets are excellent at absorbing stains, which also means they’re excellent at absorbing allergens. This means that all carpets need to be cleaned often to prevent the buildup of dust, pollen, mold spores and pet dander. Carpets should be vacuumed at least once a week and shampooed frequently to remove these unwanted allergens.
