Water, Cleaning, and Sustainability

The professional cleaning industry is far larger than most people realize, with more than $50 billion estimated in annual sales, and its impact on the environment and sustainability is considerable as well. An estimated 6 billion pounds of cleaning chemicals, many from nonrenewable petroleum products, are used each year; 450 billion pounds of paper products, some of which does get recycled but a large amount is simply discarded as waste; and an estimated 25 million pounds of cleaning equipment end up in landfills each year.

Why your office phone is filthier than the toilet

Working from home has its advantages -- no dress code, commute, or distracting meetings. You may also avoid those seasonal flus and colds because of reduced exposure to people (and their germs). But if you do work in an office, it helps to be aware of the sneaky places bacteria and viruses hide.

Below are six of these sickness vectors you might not have considered. One place you don't have to worry about? The toilet seat. "People wipe it down all the time," says Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona.

CDC Warns That New Swine Flu Strain Has 'Pandemic Potential'

A paper published Tuesday by scientists at the Centers for Disease Control suggests a new swine flu virus has the potential to cause an outbreak.

The A(H3N2)v swine flu strain that has infected at least 18 Americans since Sept. 2010 has shown the potential for human-to-human transmission. According to the paper, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the H3N2 strains "resemble viruses with pandemic potential." Terrence Tumpey, one of the authors of the study, says the current seasonal flu vaccine won't protect against this swine flu strain, although he says the CDC is working on creating a vaccine for swine flu variants such as the one he studied.

Survey: Floor Care Issues and Trends

According to an online survey conducted for Tornado Industries, 67 percent of respondents agree with the following statement, "We are stripping and refinishing floors less frequently today than we were five years ago." The other respondents either disagreed with the above statement or were "not sure."

These findings are consistent with a New Year’s prediction made by Michael Schaffer, president of Tornado, about floor care trends. "For both environmental and cost reasons, end-customers are delaying refinishing cycles or not refinishing their floors at all," he says.

However, in the long-run, delaying or not refinishing floors may actually cause more work and ultimately additional costs for end-customers, according to the respondents.  The group overwhelmingly (94 percent) agreed with the following statement, "A floor that does not have finish on it is harder to maintain."

Interesting article: The Difference Between Green And Sustainability

The words sustainable and green are often used interchangeably. But being "green" and being "sustainable" is not the same thing.

The federal government defines green as "products and services that reduce health and environmental impacts compared to similar products and services used for the same purpose," says Steve Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group and chairman of the Sustainability Dashboard.
